Viking Dishwasher Not Draining: Work Backwards From the Sump

A filmed sump at the end of a cycle is designed behaviour; standing water above the filter is not. Work backwards from the sump — the filter stack first, then the drain hose, the high loop and the disposer knockout plug.

The cycle ended, the light on the door has gone off, and there is water lying across the bottom of the tub. Sometimes it is a shallow film that you notice only because you were looking. Sometimes the bottom rack is sitting in it and the smell arrives before the plates do.

Those two situations are not the same fault, and the first job is to work out which one you have before anything gets dismantled.

A wet sump is normal, a full one is not

Some water is supposed to be there. The sump retains a small quantity after every cycle so that the pump seal does not dry out between loads, and a machine that sat bone dry would be a worse machine, not a better one. The question is never whether there is water. It is how much.

Here is a test anyone can apply. Look at the filter in the floor of the tub. If the top face of it stands proud of the water, you are looking at design. If the water has risen over the filter and spread across the floor of the tub, drainage has failed. A second check: if one folded tea towel lifts the lot in a single go, that is residue. If you are on your third towel, it is not.

Before touching anything, note three things. When it started. Whether it happens after every cycle or only the long ones. And whether anything was done to the kitchen recently — a waste disposer fitted, a sink swapped, the machine pulled forward for a floor. That last question closes more of these calls than any inspection does.

Newton supplies plenty of examples. In Newton Highlands, where renovations tend to respect the original footprint, the machine goes back into the same tight run of cabinets it came out of, with the same hose re-routed by whoever was last on their knees in there. On West Newton Hill, where kitchens have been rebuilt at the back of the house and opened into a family room, the run from the machine to the waste is frequently longer than the installer had in mind.

The filter stack, which is where this usually ends

Most of these end at the filter, which is why it is the first thing to come out. Pull the lower rack. In the floor of the tub there is normally a cylindrical coarse filter that twists a quarter turn and lifts, seated in a flat fine screen that then comes away underneath it. Take both to the sink and look at what is on them.

Read the debris rather than just washing it off. Paper labels from jars and tomato seeds sit on the coarse screen and blind it faster than anything else in a kitchen. A soft grey film across the fine mesh is grease, which points at wash temperature or detergent and will be back regardless of how thoroughly you clean today. A chalky white crust is mineral, and that is a slower, longer story about the water rather than about the load.

With both filters out, look into the sump underneath and feel around it carefully with a gloved hand. A shard of glass, a fruit stone, a fragment of bone or a wire tie parked against the impeller will stop a perfectly healthy pump dead. Anything solid comes out with fingers or pliers, and glass comes out with gloves on.

Wash the parts in warm water with a little detergent and a soft brush, rinsing the fine mesh from the clean side outwards so the debris comes off rather than through. Do not put them through the machine they came from. How often this needs doing depends entirely on how the household cooks and whether plates get scraped, so start from what the guide for your series suggests and then move it towards “more often” if the screen keeps telling you to.

The drain hose, the high loop and the air gap

Water has to climb before it can fall. The drain hose therefore has to be carried above the water line inside the tub before it drops to the waste, either strapped up under the counter as a high loop or taken through an air gap fitting on the sink deck. Without that rise, the sink can siphon into the machine and the machine can quietly take back what it just sent out.

Some installations use an air gap and some use a high loop, and which is correct where you live is a plumbing code question rather than a matter of preference. If there is a small chrome cylinder on the deck beside the tap, that is the air gap. When it spits water across the counter during the drain step, the blockage is downstream of it, not inside the machine.

Then there is the disposer plug, which is the one that catches everybody. A new waste disposer arrives with a moulded knockout sealing the dishwasher inlet, and if the fitter did not punch it out, the machine cannot drain at all. There is no partial version of this symptom — the tub simply stays full. If the trouble began the same week a disposer was installed, check that before you check anything else.

Kinks are the last of the group. Behind the machine the hose can be pinched against the back of the cabinet or crushed under a levelling foot. Only pull the machine forward if you can do it without dragging on the hose itself. Auburndale and West Newton have no shortage of kitchens where a new floor went down and the appliance was pushed back half an inch further than it came out.

What the machine sounds like when it tries and cannot

You have ears and no meter, so use them properly. Stand next to the machine and start a rinse. A working drain step is a rising whirr that settles to a steady note, followed by a gurgle at the sink as the last of it clears. That gurgle is the confirmation most people never consciously register until it stops happening.

A restricted drain gives you the same whirr with no gurgle at the end. A jammed pump gives you a low hum that gives up after a few seconds, because the motor is being told to turn and something solid will not let it. A pump running with nothing moving gives you a whirr that never changes pitch and a tub that is exactly as full afterwards as it was before.

The check valve is worth knowing about because its failure imitates all of the above. It is a one-way flap that stops what has left from coming back. When it sticks open, the tub refills itself quietly after every successful drain, and the machine gets blamed for never having drained at all.

Stop at the pump housing. Anything your fingers can see and reach with the machine isolated at the breaker is fair game; anything requiring the lower panel off and the machine live is not. Where this stops being a homeowner job

Standing water combined with a burning smell, a breaker that has already tripped, or water reaching the kitchen floor ends the home stage. Isolate the machine and leave it there.

A technician settles the questions the noise only hints at: whether the pump is drawing current and actually turning, whether the restriction sits inside the machine or somewhere out in the waste line, and whether the control ever reached the drain step in the first place. That last one is common and invisible from outside.

A visit is $95. Where the answer is the drain pump or the control that runs it, that work falls between $280 and $1,250. What it does not include is a promise about how long it takes, because the honest answer depends on what comes out of the sump.

The machine drains if I run the cycle again — is it fixed?

No, it is intermittent, which usually means a partial restriction rather than a failed part. Debris that shifts under a second burst of pumping will settle back where it was. The retry is useful information though: a machine that clears on the second attempt has a working pump, so the fault lies in what the water has to pass through on the way out.

What does a fault code on the display actually tell me?

It tells you what the control observed, not which component let it down. A drainage code means the machine did not see the water level fall in the time it expected, and that fits a blinded filter, a kinked hose, an unpunched disposer plug and a seized pump equally well. The code narrows the area to search; it does not name the part.

Can I pour vinegar or a drain cleaner in to clear it?

No. Chemical drain cleaners are not made for the seals, plastics and pump inside a dishwasher, and a caustic product sitting in a tub that will not empty has nowhere to go and plenty of time to do harm. Blockages here are physical things — labels, seeds, glass, hardened grease — and they come out by hand from the filter and the sump.
