Every electrode clicking when you turn one knob is normal — most professional ranges fire the whole row from one spark module. The fault worth chasing is the burner that will not light: cap seating, blocked ports, electrode position, and delayed lighting above all.

You reach for the front knob and the entire cooktop starts up like a shop full of clocks — every electrode ticking at once, six of them, for one burner. It sounds expensive. Nine times out of ten it is not a fault at all, and the actual problem is the quiet one: the burner you turned on is not lighting.

One thing before the rest. A gas smell that does not clear when you open a window means everyone leaves the house and the gas utility gets telephoned from outside. That call is never to a repair firm, and nothing further down this page changes it.

The question that halves the problem

Which burners light is the useful question. Which burners click is not. A click is an electrical fact — high voltage arrived at an electrode — and it stays completely silent on the subject of fuel, because gas reaches the ports without making a sound. So count flames, not noise.

The chorus has a dull explanation. Plenty of professional ranges run every electrode from a single spark module, so one knob opening one switch sets the whole row firing together. It is how the design works. If the burner you asked for lights and the others carry on ticking for a moment, nothing is wrong with the range.

Now split the real fault. One position dark while the rest light points inward, at that burner’s cap, its ports and its electrode. Nothing lighting anywhere points outward, past the burners, to the module, the incoming gas or the earth path the module relies on. There is also a third case that belongs to neither: ticking that continues with all knobs off, which means a switch is stuck closed and the module has never been told to stand down. That one is a call, not a project.

Note down which positions fail, whether it happens from cold, and what changed in the days beforehand. Seating, debris and the boil-over nobody mentioned

The most common cause of a burner that sparks and never catches is something physical sitting where gas should be flowing. The cap, the ports and whatever went over the side last week account for most of these calls, and none of them need a part ordering.

Boil-overs are the ones nobody mentions when they ring, because nobody connects a pot of pasta on Tuesday with a dead burner on Friday. Starchy water, stock and anything with sugar in it run over the rim, dry into the ports and carbonise the next few times the burner runs. The blockage builds gradually, the flame gets patchy, and eventually the ring nearest the electrode stops carrying gas at all — which is precisely the ring that has to be lit.

The cap is the other half. A cap that landed on a crumb, or that was set down slightly out of register after cleaning, redirects the flame path just enough that fuel never presents itself at the spark. Nothing looks wrong from a standing position. Lift the cap, brush the seat and the head with something soft, put it back and feel it drop into place. Then crouch and look along the row: an out-of-place cap sits higher than its neighbours and is obvious from that angle only.

Clear ports with warm water and a soft brush, and use a wooden toothpick where something has hardened. Steel pins and paperclips deform port edges permanently and the burner never behaves properly afterwards. If any of it has been washed, understand that water hides inside the head and around the base of the electrode where a towel cannot reach, and that ignition stays suppressed until it is genuinely dry. No honest drying time exists to quote — it depends on how wet it got and how warm the room is — so wait past the point of impatience before you conclude anything.

The electrode: position, cleanliness and cracks

The reference for a healthy spark is narrow: a rapid blue-white snap crossing a short air gap between the tip of the electrode and the nearest metal of the burner head, in the same place on every pulse. Watch a burner that works, in a darkened kitchen, and you have the comparison you need for the one that does not.

Position goes first. Electrodes get knocked out of alignment during cleaning or when something heavy is dragged across the top, and a tip sitting too far from the head, or angled toward a grate, sends its spark somewhere the gas is not. The module continues to click regardless, because nothing in that circuit reports where the energy landed.

Then the ceramic insulator, the white sleeve the tip protrudes from. A hairline crack in it lets the pulse escape early into the metal underneath instead of crossing the gap. This is one of the more deceptive faults in the appliance: the sound is normal, the timing is normal, sometimes there is a faint spark visible in the wrong place, and the burner simply refuses. It typically worsens in damp weather and improves on a dry day, so people report it as intermittent.

Residue does the same job as a crack. Carbonised spill bridging tip to head hands the spark an easier route than the air gap, and the burner ticks indefinitely. Clean around the tip carefully, dry, with nothing abrasive, and a fair number of these come back to life on the spot.

Delayed ignition, and why it is not something to live with

A burner that lights after several seconds with a soft thump is not a slow burner. It is a burner that released fuel into the room before the spark caught it, so what ignites is an accumulated pocket rather than a fresh stream. That is the noise, that is the small pressure you feel, and that is why this ranks above a burner that never lights at all.

The ranking surprises people. A dead burner is obvious and gets abandoned within a day. A burner that lights on the fourth click still gets dinner made, so it is tolerated through a whole winter while the pause before each light stretches out. The tolerable version is the one worth acting on.

Why does every burner click when I only turned one knob?

That is a shared spark module doing exactly what it should. What matters is the burner you actually turned on: if that one lights, nothing is wrong with the range.

Is a burner that lights after five seconds a problem?

Treat it as one. During those seconds fuel leaves the ports unburned and gathers above the cooktop, which is why the eventual light arrives as a flat thump instead of a quiet catch. A dead burner gets retired within a day; a slow one gets used all winter while the pause quietly stretches. Have the cap register and the ports nearest the electrode looked at.

The flame is orange rather than blue — is that related?

Frequently, because both symptoms point at the burner head. A flame carrying orange or yellow is burning differently from the way it was designed to, and fouled ports, a cap out of position and debris inside the head sit on the same list as the ignition faults above. Household dust can tint a flame briefly. If it persists, it belongs on the same visit rather than a later one.
